The idea of organizing the symposium was suggested several years ago by my first wife the piano player and educator Lic. Ana Patricia Valverde Uzaga. I accepted her idea enthusiastically, not only because of the subject but because of my collaboration of several years with the specialist, Dr. Graham Pont.

The symposium, like the production of two publications (when I write this, I understand that there will be a printed version published by Ministerio de Cultura de Costa Rica and an Internet version for the World Wide Web, to be hosted by one of the participating universities) could not have become reality without the extraordinary assistance of my peers at UNED, especially Lic. Marta Rivas Rossi, Lic. Sandra Cartín and Master Víctor Hugo Méndez. The Ministerio de Cultura, Juventud y Deportes and the Comité Costarricense de Cooperación con la UNESCO, represented by the valuable assistance of Lic. Mauricio Solano, Lic. Juan Manuel Arana and Master Carmen Méndez, were fundamental to organize the meeting. Dr. Arnoldo Mora, Costa Rican Minister of Culture, authorized part of the financial support.

I also thank the assistance of Miss Sara Valverde and Mrs. Edith Olivares. Meeting costs were covered -in order of importance- by: Dr. Graham Pont, Ministerio de Cultura, Juventud y Deportes, Julián Monge-Nájera and UNED. The production of the printed version was made possible by Lic. Mauricio Solano and Ministerio de Cultura, Juventud y Deportes, Costa Rica.
